Game Five: 2004 Auburn Tigers (13-0) vs 1994 Florida Gators (10-2-1)
Tale of the tape:
'04 Auburn Tigers:
Points Per Game: 32
Points Allowed Per Game: 11
Avg. Margin of Victory: 21
Key wins: #16 LSU, #13 Tennessee (Twice), #7 Georgia, #10 Virginia Tech
Losses: None
'94 Florida Gators:
Points Per Game: 41
Points Allowed Per Game: 18
Avg. Margin of Victory: 32
Key wins: #4 Alabama, #22 Tennessee
Losses: #9 Auburn, #4 Florida St
Argument for Auburn:
In a word, balance. The offense could score, the defense could hit. Like the '98 Vols, both sides of the ball were just loaded with NFL talent. The offense was led by Jason Campbell at QB who had an outstanding Senior year. Tailbacks Caddillac Williams and Ronnie Brown shared rushing duties, with Williams going over 1,200 yards ...more

'00 Florida:

Avg. Margin of Victory: 25
Key wins: #18 Auburn, #19 South Carolina, #20 Georgia, #22 LSU,
Losses: #24 Mississippi State, #2 Miami, #5 Florida State
Argument for Tennessee:
This UT squad, minus Peyton Manning, managed to win the title in '98. Tee Martin led them there with a strong arm and decent running ability. It didn't hurt that his WR corps included ...more

Mythical Former SEC Champion Playoffs
Mythical playoffs are all the rage these days. Everyone loves speculating over 8 or 16 team end-of-year playoffs to determine the NCAA football champion. At SECFans.com, we like playoffs too. What better way to fill the downtime of the off-season than to speculate over a dream backyard brawl of former SEC Championship game winners? That's right, over the next few days we are going to see what could happen if these SEC champs went toe-to-toe.
Here's some details. We seeded from #1-4, giving preference to final record, ranking, and strength of schedule. The 4 undefeated champions naturally got the four available #1 seeds. Next, we seeded the #4's. Before the #4's were seeded, however, we had to bring the field down to 16 (there have been 17 SEC winners of SEC Championship games). Sorry LSU fans, the '01 squad just didn’t make the cut. There have been multiple 3 loss SEC Champions since 1992, and one had to go. Unfortunately for '01 LSU, their strength of schedule ranking was 23rd that year. '99 Alabama and '00 Florida both had the #1 ranked SOS in their respective ...more

Mythical Playoffs Series 03 LSU vs 93 Florida
Game One: 2003 LSU Tigers (13-1) vs 1993 Florida Gators (11-2)
Tale of the tape:
'03 LSU:
Points Per Game: 34
Points Allowed Per Game: 11
Avg. Margin of Victory: 26
Key wins: #3 Oklahoma, #7 Georgia (twice)
Losses: #24 Florida
'93 Florida Gators:
Points Per Game: 40
Points Allowed Per Game: 19
Avg. Margin of Victory: 26
Key wins: #12 Tennessee, #14 Alabama
Losses: #1 Florida St, #4 Auburn
Argument for LSU:
First things first: the LSU squad had one of the most impressive defenses to ever grace the league. Allowing a paltry 11 points per contest, the Tigers didn't have to score that many points to win a game. Still, they managed to put up 34 points a game with a talented offense. Loaded at RB with guys like Justin Vincent and Joseph Addai, the LSU running attack would put some ...more

Mythical Playoffs Series 06 Florida vs 97 Tennessee
Game Two: 2006 Florida Gators (13-1) vs 1997 Tennessee Volunteers (11-2)
Tale of the tape:
'06 Florida:
Points Per Game: 29
Points Allowed Per Game: 14
Avg. Margin of Victory: 18
Key wins: #3 LSU, #25 Tennessee, #23 Georgia, #2 Ohio State
Losses: #9 Auburn
'97 Tennessee:
Points Per Game: 33
Points Allowed Per Game: 22
Avg. Margin of Victory: 16
Key wins: #11 Auburn, #5 UCLA, #10 Georgia,
Losses: #2 Nebraska, #4 Florida
Argument for Tennessee:
The 97 Vols were a bit of an anomaly. One one hand, their potent offense led by Peyton Manning had no trouble finding the end zone. But they had a hard time closing out games because their defense allowed 22 points per contest. They matched up well against the '06 Gators in a number of areas. Florida didn't face an offense in 2006 that was nearly as effective as the '97 Vols. Manning was great, but the Gators defense would also have to account for ...more

Early Commitment Trend Good To Tide, Gators
If you're a Gator fan, or a 'Bama fan, you're probably enjoying a new trend in college football recruiting: early commitments. Fans of both schools should probably thank Mac Brown. In recent years, Texas has led the way in terms of collecting verbal commitments from guys well before they even take the first snap of their senior high school season. Other teams like Georgia and to a lesser extent, Oklahoma, have joined the early commitment party as well. While getting guys in early can build momentum for the recruiting season, it does present it's own set of concerns.
You've heard the phrase before. "The big dogs walk late." In years past, that statement had a great deal of merit. Certainly, signing day still offers it's share of 11th hour announcement fireworks. (If you have a handler/agent/relative like Bryce Brown, you may not even commit by signing day). However, in the last few years, a trend of kids ending the suspense early with a verbal commitment seems to have gained traction around the country. So much, in fact, that it's ...more

Florida 2009, Another Clean Sweep?
The University of Florida recently held their spring game and let us see a bit of the underclassmen that are coming up to replace the likes of Percy Harvin. Why? Because everyone else was injured. I don't feel spring scrimmages give much insight into how a team will fare over the course of the Fall (See: Auburn), but I don't think anything is going to slow down UF next year either.
Charleston Southern University - Opening the season with a powder-puff is the norm for major programs these days, and UF will trounce Bucs in an easy win. Most coaches would pull the first string after the first quarter in a game like this, but look for Coach Meyer to play them well into the second half. (63-6, UF)
Troy University - Another easy win for the Gators. The only downside to the first two games will be the possibility of injuries. The Gators will bust the Trojans' dreams with a major defeat. (54-6, UF)
University of Tennessee - The first in what might be an epic battle of bad blood as Florida welcomes Coach Kiffin to The Swamp. After running his mouth since ...more
